Engineering a Healthier School Environment

Creating safe, healthy, and energy-efficient learning environments is key to student success and well-being in today’s educational settings. Rochester Public Schools selected LHB and CRW to provide architectural and engineering services for the $44 million renovation of John Marshall High School, originally built in 1956.

LHB replaced the original steam boilers and most air handling units throughout the 340,000 SF facility — including classrooms, shops, gym, pool, and auditorium — improving indoor air quality and comfort. A new high-performance building envelope was designed to enhance energy efficiency, achieving over 50% in energy savings.

To reduce disruption, construction was phased over three summers. The project also included lighting and ceiling replacements, plus power and technology upgrades. These improvements modernized the facility and aligned older areas with current district standards, creating a safer, more functional learning environment.

Optimized for Improved Air Quality

Displacement ventilation now serves as the primary air distribution method through standard VAV boxes, delivering optimal air quality and reducing mechanical noise while significantly improving energy efficiency. This approach delivers fresh air at a low velocity, minimizing drafts, and creating a more comfortable indoor environment.
