PreK-4 Building Transformed

Utility Costs Drop Over 50%

ACGC PreK-4 underwent a full-scale transformation to better serve students, staff, and the community. This project included the complete removal of all building components systems down to the structural shell. The remaining 58,500 SF — built in phases from 1921 to 1974 —  was completely renovated with a new 3,250 SF addition housing the new secure entry, administration wing, and elevator lobby. Construction began in March 2020 and was completed by November, carefully phased to keep the district’s only elementary school operational.

LHB led the architectural design, featuring full exterior restoration, new windows and roofing, and modern mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems. A low-temperature air displacement system improves air quality and reduces noise, while tunable LED lighting enhances comfort and energy efficiency. The reorganized layout improves flow and accessibility, with ADA-compliant restrooms and upgraded fixtures. Despite a larger footprint, utility costs dropped by over 50%, outperforming new construction benchmarks. This project reflects a smart, sustainable investment in student-centered design.
