The Cooperage
Housing for Seniors
The building, designed for the needs of active seniors, includes 60 one-bedroom units for low-income residents along with tenant lounges available on every floor, a community room, a four-season porch, and a beautifully landscaped exterior courtyard space that includes trellises and an artistic focal piece.
The sustainable and modern exterior of the 64,338-square-foot facility is achieved with brick, metal cladding, stucco, and steel porch canopies. Being adjacent to an active rail line, the design of the building envelope addresses acoustical separation needs. The Hiawatha regional bike trail is steps away from the site and the design responds to the desire to offer trail and bike access to encourage active living by making bike storage a priority within the building as well as providing convenient access to the trail from the site.
