LHB is celebrating the retirement of Kim Bretheim, FAIA, whose contributions helped shape the firm’s housing studio and elevate its impact across Minnesota and beyond.

Kim joined LHB in 2002 through the acquisition of Paul Madson & Associates, shortly after completing the acclaimed North Star Lofts in the Mill District. With a deep passion for affordable housing, Kim quickly became a driving force in expanding LHB’s housing portfolio. He assumed leadership of the housing studio from Rick Carter, broadening its market reach and mentoring a new generation of designers.

Throughout his tenure, Kim cultivated lasting client relationships, notably with Carleton College, and helped develop LHB’s expertise in affordable and supportive housing through projects with Trellis Co., CommonBond Communities, Dakota County CDA, and Center City Housing, among others. His commitment to design excellence and social impact continued through his service on the board of the Greater Minnesota Housing Fund, where he championed affordable housing initiatives.

Under Kim’s leadership, LHB completed its first Passive House-certified project and earned numerous design awards. His influence extends beyond project work. Kim played a key role in the strategic asset acquisition of Cermak Rhoades Architects, strengthening LHB’s position in the housing market and continuing CRA’s legacy of design excellence.

Kim’s professional achievements have been widely recognized. He was named a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 2019 and received the Housing and Community Development Achievement Award from the Minnesota Chapter of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) in 2020.

In preparation for his retirement, Kim passed the housing studio leadership reins to Michelle Pribyl and Michael Madden in 2022 while continuing his mentorship of others in the studio. His legacy will continue through the talented team he helped build and the values he instilled.

LHB extends its deepest gratitude to Kim for his lasting contributions to the firm and the communities it serves. ∎
