Wellness Center & Early Childhood Development Center
Community-Focused Wellness Hub
This 72,000-square-foot Wellness Center brings together health, fitness, and early education under one roof. Anchored by a YMCA aquatics center, gym, studios, and a 1/8-mile walking track, the facility also includes the Yellow Bike Coffee café and multiple community gathering spaces. An adjoining lifestyle and physical therapy clinic operated by Essentia Health enhances the center’s holistic approach to wellness.
The project repurposed the 1992 Hermantown Middle School addition to house the Essentia Therapy Clinic and Early Childhood Development Center — an innovative feature that provides licensed, full-day childcare and supports early learning in the region. This adaptive reuse helped meet budget goals while supporting community needs.
Designed with future growth in mind, the facility includes an integrated outdoor patio, a nature-connected playground, and a layout that supports expansion. Originally projected to serve 500 members in its first year, the center now welcomes more than 5,000 — far surpassing expectations. From site selection to construction, the project prioritized environmental sensitivity and community connection.

Guiding Projects Through Every Phase
LHB provided project management services from day one — guiding the project through predesign, community engagement, concept design, lobbying, and securing state bonding funds. After funding approval, LHB led the full design process, supported fundraising and construction manager selection, and provided construction administration to help bring the vision to life.

Thoughtfully Placed, Naturally Connected
The facility’s location was chosen after careful consideration to minimize disturbance to the sensitive wetlands and wildlife. From planning and construction to ultimate usage, the Wellness Center promotes human relationships and connectivity to the outdoors. LHB also provided boundary, topographic, and utility survey for the selected site.

Intentional Design — For Today and Tomorrow
The integrated outdoor patio connects visitors to nature and offers views of the children’s playground. The site design and building placement allow for future expansion, reflecting a community-focused approach that supports growth. In the main lobby, the facility’s unique design fosters multi-generational engagement through vibrant spaces, including a fireside lounge and large multipurpose room.
