Rebuilding Papa Charlie’s
LHB partnered with Lutsen Mountains Corporation to reimagine and rebuild a North Shore icon after the 2023 fire that destroyed Papa Charlie’s. Rising from the same beloved location, the new Charlie’s Alpine Bistro opened in August 2025 — an ambitious $10 million rebuild delivered in just nine months.
The 9,825 SF venue blends contemporary design with classic lodge character, featuring an open kitchen, a water vapor fireplace framed by sculptural wood “mountains,” and expansive windows showcasing Moose Mountain. Guests enjoy a full bar, an outdoor deck overlooking the Sawtooth Mountains, weekly acoustic performances, and an expanded menu centered on locally sourced ingredients.
Next door, Charlie’s Sunset Studios offer eight high-end lodging units and a dedicated bridal suite, each with fireplaces, kitchenettes, and private balconies overlooking the Poplar River. LHB provided full architectural and engineering services, emphasizing natural materials and harmony with the surrounding landscape.
The result is a vibrant, ski-in/ski-out destination that elevates the Lutsen Mountains guest experience year-round —honoring a community landmark while creating a new chapter for generations to come.

Guided by Frank Lloyd Wright’s principles of building in harmony with nature, the new design embraces its mountainside setting. LHB worked closely with longtime staff to honor the venue’s legacy while creating a seamless architectural connection to the rugged North Shore landscape.

LHB delivered coordinated structural, mechanical, and electrical systems that ensure durability, efficiency, and seamless performance on a remote mountain site — achieving an ambitious timeline without compromising quality or safety.

Papa Charlie’s emerges as a refined mountain retreat where elevated dining, boutique lodging, and outdoor adventure meet. Thoughtfully connected spaces allow guests to flow from slopes to suites to evening gatherings, creating a year-round destination defined by comfort and effortless elegance.
