National Eagle Center Expansion
Enhancing Eagle Care and Cultural Connection
Sitting on the banks of the Mississippi River, the impressive 15,000-square-foot National Eagle Center (NEC), designed by LHB, has served the community since 2007. The engineering, architecture, and planning firm was once again selected as lead designer, this time for the center’s second phase, furthering its commitment and partnership to honor one of nature’s most majestic creatures.
Completed in 2023, the interpretive center’s expansion project enhanced eagle care, elevated the visitor experience, integrated with Main Street, and expanded gallery spaces to showcase Native American culture. Key features include revamped aviaries, a ‘front door’ to the historic district, and a grand open space for community events celebrating Wabasha’s natural history and heritage. The second phase of the NEC now offers a cohesive, welcoming environment where visitors can learn about the majesty of eagles and the richness of Native American culture.
Looking ahead to additional initiatives. Stay tuned.
Elevating Eagle Habitats for All
The aviaries and mews were completely redesigned to give the eagles direct access to fresh air and daylight while enhancing safety and sanitation. This upgrade not only improved the living conditions for these magnificent birds but also provided visitors with the chance to observe them up close behind the scenes.
Eagles: Art and Environment Unite
Former classrooms and administration offices were transformed into galleries showcasing environmental displays and Native American artwork that highlight the significance of eagles.
