National Eagle Center Expansion
Enhancing Eagle Care and Cultural Connection
After designing the National Eagle Center (NEC) in 2007 — an impressive 15,000-square-foot interpretive center on the banks of the Mississippi River — LHB’s work continued.
In 2023, the second phase of the NEC, thoughtfully designed by LHB, enhances eagle care, elevates the visitor experience, integrates with Main Street, and expands gallery spaces showcasing Native American culture. This project includes revamped aviaries, a ‘front door’ to the historic district, and a grand open space for community events celebrating Wabasha’s natural history and heritage. Overall, the NEC’s second phase creates a cohesive and welcoming environment where visitors can learn about the majesty of eagles and the richness of Native American culture.
Elevating Eagle Habitats for All
The aviaries and mews were completely redesigned to give the eagles direct access to fresh air and daylight while enhancing safety and sanitation. This upgrade not only improved the living conditions for these magnificent birds but also provided visitors with the chance to observe them up close behind the scenes.
Eagles: Art and Environment Unite
Former classrooms and administration offices were transformed into galleries showcasing environmental displays and Native American artwork that highlight the significance of eagles.
